A nevus is a cutaneous malformation, congenital (present at birth) or not, with a variable size, more or less limited, more or less colored, hairy or not.

Numerous kinds of nevi are described. The more commons are:

  • Pigmentary nevi
    • limited lesions, also called "beauty spot".
    • they may be present on any part of the body
    • congenital or appearing during life.
  • Spitz nevi
    • Appearing more often after puberty, with a melanome-like appearance.
  • Giant nevi
    • congenital, with an important size.
    • they may be present on any party of the body, but more frequently on skull, shoulders, back, buttocks, upper parts of thighs, and perineum.
    • sometimes homogeneous, often haired; sometimes heterogeneous and atypical with verruceous parts, more colored parts, and ulcerations.
  • Dysplasic nevi
    • uncommon in size and aspect, with an high risk of malignant transformation.
  • Blue nevi

Medical supervision of nevi is necessary and surgical treatment of nevi is highly recommanded in case of alteration.

Apparition of a naevus seems to be a fortuitous event, and genetic transmission is not provable.
