During their evolution, hemangioma can get complications: painful erosion, ulceration even, often after traumatism (stroke, fall, scratch, bite). Sometimes it may occur an infection during involving evolution (progressive necrosis). These complications need an adapted treatment: antalgics, antibiotics to prevent or cure, local dressings, and exceptionnally hospitalisation. Little hemangiomas (from 1 to 2 cms of diameter), located on an hidden area (back, abdomen, thighs) are easy to manage. Children and parents wait quietly the retrogression and the "whitewashing" of the angioma More bulky hemangioma, located on visible parts ( face, neck, hands) are more difficult to supervise and can get important complications: closure of eye (angioma of eyelid), nose deformation (Cyrano angioma), deformation of lip and difficulties of nutrition, respiratory failure ( nasal angioma or angioma of pharynx).
These threatening lesions must be treated if they are menacing a function or the life of a baby. The first intention medical treatment is corticotherapy (corticoïds at high dose, under dermatological supervision. Sometimes it could be necessary to use other medications as interferons alpha 2a ou alpha 2b. Voluminous hemangioma can also get cosmetic complications. Of course, it is very important to listen what the parents have to say...
